Abstract

The umbilicus is a second intention healing scar, circular or oval in its shape, usually located in the midpoint between the xiphoid and the pubic symphysis. Umbilical esthetic appearance is not only the result of the umbilical shape, but also of its surrounding tissues, location and relation to the neighboring structures in the abdomen, pelvis, and chest. A treatment protocol has been designed based on specific diagnostic characteristics of the umbilicus: alterations of shape, alterations of position, alterations of surrounding tissues, and scarring problems. A wide variety of techniques are detailed: umbilicosliding, enriched adipose migrografts, abdominoplasty, reversed abdominoplasty, floating umbilicus mini-abdominoplasty, and 5 flourouracil infiltrations, among others.
