Speech Therapy in Cleft Patients

Cleft Lip and Palate Treatment

Abstract

The objective of the speech therapist is prevention, guidance, rehabilitation, and reduction of complications resulting from changes in the myofunctional orofacial system (SMO) (ASHA 2001; Ibayashi et al. 2008; Namura et al. 2008; Castro-Sanchez et al. 2011). These changes include specific conditions or behaviors that could negatively impact the posture and appearance of organs belonging to this system and its functions—breathing, sucking, swallowing, chewing, and speech (Felício and Ferreira 2008; Felício et al. 2010).
