Abstract

The UNESCO General History of the Caribbean is one of the most comprehensive series of works ever produced on Caribbean History by Caribbean scholars. The works highlight the historic commonalities and differences of Caribbean societies in the areas of culture, economy, and polity. Chapter 4 unravels the challenges in using history as a springboard towards integration in the Caribbean and why other drivers such as culture, technology, and academia stand as important bearers in forging a united Caribbean. Continuing to regard the region as a patchwork of entities having different socio-economic, political, and historical trajectories impacts upon a successful regional integration project, and also negatively affects alternate avenues of integration that can generate optimism for the movement.
