Abstract

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an inflammatory and demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system which principally involves the white matter tracts of the cerebral hemispheres, brainstem, optic nerves, and spinal cord. Clinically, patients present with multifocal neurological abnormalities reflecting the widespread involvement in the central nervous system. ADEM typically has a monophasic course with a favorable prognosis. There is a broad spectrum of demyelinating central nervous system disorders in children with considerable overlap in terms of presenting symptoms and imaging findings leading to diagnostic uncertainty. Clinicians must consider various monophasic and relapsing inflammatory disorders in the differential diagnosis of ADEM.
