Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent disease, characterized by upper airway collapse during sleep. Prevalence of OSA has risen with obesity, a major risk factor for developing the disease, and is much higher in patients undergoing elective surgery. OSA patients undergoing surgical process should be managed perioperatively developing an individual plan decreasing the risk of having postoperative complications in these patients. Proper history, screening, and diagnostic test should be used in order to identify patients with OSA syndrome and consider an adequate perioperative management and consider the use of CPAP therapy perioperatively, optimal opioid titration for postoperative pain control, and adequate monitoring in the PACU.
