Anesthesia in High-Risk Patients

Abstract

The occurrence of aortic valve stenosis in the general population has grown in recent decades and is linked to the population aging. The number of patients undergoing noncardiac surgery carrying aortic valve stenosis is increasing, and this condition is involved in the patient’s morbidity and mortality. The objectives of this chapter are to show the crucial importance of the knowledge of this condition before noncardiac surgery, to make the diagnosis, and to manage these peculiar patients. We also describe the recently published studies concerning aortic valve stenosis and perioperative management in noncardiac surgery. This compilation was intended to facilitate the physicians’ decision before, during, and after the surgical period.
