Analysis of Agronomic Characters in Soybean Genotypes Treated with Antioxidant Application under Salt Stress

Abstract

Salinity is one of the environmental challenges in the world, affecting several agronomic characters and being the most limiting factor for plant productivity and quality. The role of exogenous applications of antioxidants (ascorbic acid, salicylic acid, and α-tocopherol) at different concentrations (0 mg L−1, 250 mg L−1, 500 mg L−1, and 750 mg L−1) under salt stress (EC 5–6 mS cm−1) in soybean genotypes was investigated in soil-filled earthen pots during 2016 at the Faculty of Agriculture University of Sumatera Utara. The results of the statistical analysis showed that the fresh and dry weights of roots and shoots, volume of roots, and number of pods showed significant increases with exogenous application of antioxidants in comparison with the corresponding control. No significant differences were found among plants treated with antioxidant in terms of the number of branches and number of leaves. Treatment with α-tocopherol 500 mg·L−1 resulted in the highest root and shoot dry weights and number of pods in comparison with control plants and the other treatments. It was concluded that α-tocopherol could be used as a potential growth regulator to improve salt tolerance in soybean.
