Abstract

The final chapter of von Neumann’s book is entitled “The Measuring Process”. But the real topic is “us”, and our acquisition of knowledge. The core message of quantum mechanics, in the words of Niels Bohr, is: “In the drama of existence we are ourselves both actors and spectators.” It is our influence on our acts of acquiring knowledge that allows us actors to transform a quantum world of potentialities into actualities that are expressions of our values. It is these consequences of our probing actions that give meaning to our lives.
