Abstract

Status epilepticus (SE) is the second most frequent potentially fatal neurologic emergency after stroke. Its incidence is 10–40 cases per 100,000 people per year and appears to be increasing, probably due to better recognition. Rapid and effective treatment should be administered, but SE is a heterogeneous condition, and a good knowledge of possible and expected outcomes for a particular patient should be helpful in daily practice to provide the best tailored management and to orient caregivers and relatives. In this chapter devoted to the generalized convulsive form of SE (GCSE), representing around half of SE treated in acute facilities, we highlight currently known outcome predictors. In addition to seizure type, many other features influence mortality and functional outcome, such as demographics, extent of consciousness impairment, SE duration, underlying etiology, and treatment. All these predictors are reviewed after a short recap of SE consequences from a pathophysiological perspective. Finally, we discuss how to use these considerations in clinical practice.
