Abstract

This chapter discusses how scrappers have their own subcultural norms, values, and mores described as a scrapper’s code, which includes concepts to reduce territorial conflicts: first come first serve and show respect. Scrappers would ask first in an effort to keep from stealing and had disdain for metal thieves, proudly claiming they were “not a thief.” Scrappers tended to be part of a community whose relationships were forged by encounters at the recycling yard, on the street, and by familial connections. Scrappers often assisted one another when in need. Most of these values, beliefs, and behaviors are absent from thieves, and occasionally appear contradictory to the scrappers’ code. Metal thieves were not simply scrappers who stole, but rather functioned separately and outside of the subculture of scrappers.
