Abstract
The overall goals of pituitary tumor surgery are to reverse any endocrinopathy, restore the normal pituitary function, relieve mass effect, reestablish normal neurological status, determine a diagnosis, and resect as much tumor as possible to minimize the chance of recurrence. Preoperative evaluation of a patient with a pituitary lesion is critical for identifying patients that are potential candidates for surgery. This chapter evaluates the surgical indications for patients with pituitary tumors and identifies the precautions that must be adhered to when dealing with various types of pituitary tumors.
