Abstract
The large proposed Calico Solar Project generated environmental concerns and a lawsuit by environmental groups (i.e., Defenders of Wildlife, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Sierra Club), and was ultimately terminated by the developer K Road Power. The failed project, located in California’s Mohave Desert, was either an example of a successful campaign by environmental groups to stop development in an environmentally sensitive area with threatened wildlife (e.g., Desert Tortoise), or the result of changing market conditions where the project became economically unviable for the developer. Regardless of the ultimate reason for project failure, the case study provides a classic example of environmental concerns versus renewable energy development.
