Abstract

Within this chapter you will find an introduction to the world of employment contracts and contract negotiation. At some point every successful surgical resident is faced with the daunting task of leaving residency and establishing a livelihood. In today’s system, even as fewer physicians are developing independent practices and a growing percentage are “hired” or “employed” by larger hospital systems, the variables available for negotiation can be overwhelming. This text provides basic definitions and guidance regarding areas on which one should focus in both job searches and negotiations to achieve the goal of a long and fulfilling career.
