Abstract
The task of this chapter is to set up the subsequent analysis of SDS by providing a way to understand the political context within which the party emerged in the spring and summer of 1990. It discusses a convergence of the various developments that led to the collapse of the Yugoslav communist party-state hegemony and created a pluralist political terrain that heavily favored ethno-nationalists. The analysis shows that Bosnia-Herzegovina initially resisted a surging wave of nationalism coming from Serbia and Croatia. As late as the summer of 1990, Bosnia had a vibrant pluralist scene with dozens of parties and informal movements but few signs of latent nationalist sentiments that would come to dominate later in the year.
