Environmental Change and Human Security in Africa and the Middle East

Abstract

Despite international efforts, environmental change still is one of humanity’s greatest challenges. Moreover, it is one of the most serious threats, especially in Africa, related to many vulnerabilities associated with several factors such as increasing drought, variability of temperatures, higher percentage of unemployment, conflicts, desertification, lack of rainfall and destabilized security. Nuba Mountains is rich with various tree species which grow naturally, however it is very sensitive to global environmental and to the climate change. This research was designed to study the impact of environmental change on demographical dynamics and to determine the factors that exacerbate vulnerability in the study area as well as to map and assess the Land Use Land Cover (LU/LC) change during the past decades (1985–2011). Data was collected in two forms of semi-structured interviews of household heads with a sample size of 145 contributions, proportionally distributed between 11 villages in the state additionally multi-temporal optical satellite data (i.e. LANDSAT TM and TERRA ASTER) were used to study the LU/LC changes. The qualitative and quantitative techniques were used to analyze the socio-economic data. Post Classification Analysis (PCA), as well as Post Change Detection (PCD) techniques, were applied. The results show that there was a major degradation of surface vegetation in addition to high rates of displacement and migration to other states. In sum, the successful key to face the impacts of environmental and climate change need to create dynamic innovation research, strategies, management and policy that focus on local communities to avoid the hazard of marginalizing those who rely on natural resources for subsistence and income generation.
