Abstract

The year 1950, as well as seeing the publication of Whipple’s icy conglomerate model, was also the year that saw an equally important breakthrough in our understanding of the dynamics of the Sun’s system of comets, which, in turn, had important ramifications for the theory of their origin. Somewhat ironically, this breakthrough had also been anticipated earlier, just as Whipple’s model of the physical nature of comets had been.
