Abstract

Similar to what is happening in other European countries, the level of concentration is high in all news media markets in Portugal. Only a few diversified media companies are dominating the markets. These companies follow a strategy of consolidation in the domestic markets and an international strategy to grow in overseas markets. This chapter shows that news media companies did not have direct access to economic support programs, unlike other industries. However, the financial supports for these programs have been progressively reduced and rethought in recent years, not only because their impact was limited, but also due to the economic pressures brought by the adverse situation that the country has gone through since 2010. Despite that innovation policy for the news media industry in Portugal does not reflect an explicit and proactive attitude from the State, the State presence can be indirectly seen.
