National Forest Inventories

Abstract

The Austrian NFI is the largest forest monitoring program in Austria. Since the 1960s seven sample-based NFIs have been conducted. The Austrian NFI provides information about the wood resources and the status and changes in the forest ecosystems of Austria. The results are used as basis for decision-making in forest and environmental policy, for fulfilling the reporting obligations of many international processes, and as data source for numerous research projects. The country report gives an overview about the Austrian NFI including its history and objectives, the sampling methods, collected data, data processing, reporting and the use of results. Based on the seventh NFI (2007–2009) the forest resources of Austria are presented in terms of forest area by sub-categories like management systems, forest functions, ownership, tree species, age classes and growth classes, and in terms of standing stock, increment and drain by tree species and their commercial relevance. The assessment and estimation of wood resources is described for the topics of forest available for wood supply, wood quality, change estimation, and other wooded land and trees outside forest. An outlook on further developments with regard to the estimation of available wood resources is given in a concluding section.
