Abstract
The umbilicus is the only natural scar in the body and marks the attachment site of the umbilical cord to the placenta. The authors discuss anatomy, umbilicus development, cultural influences, shapes, and umbilical pathology. They describe umbilicoplasty in patients with hernia and an “outie” umbilicus as well as during abdominoplasty. A relatively small, vertically shaped umbilicus with “hooding” represents youth; therefore, we as surgeons are constantly striving to recreate the same in patients with different umbilical pathologies presented to us or as a component of abdominal contour surgery.
