Abstract

The future of Black Studies is examined in a case study of the development of an American Cultures requirement at the University of California at Berkeley. The requirement is unique in its comparative aspects that include the conceptualization of Whites as one of several identity groups. That is, being White is decentered at the same time as it is acknowledged. The requirement has led to creative applications of the criteria across a range of disciplines. The result has been an example of democratic pluralism that generates generalizations without resorting to absolute truths or universals.
