Abstract

The motion of electrons in a three-dimensional solid state system is generally characterized by numerous degrees of freedom spanning a large phase space. Despite the vast number of microscopic states, the overall macroscopic behavior of such systems is often rather simple and can in most cases be conveniently described by only a few quantities. It appears almost paradoxical that reducing the electronic degrees of freedom, in contrast, yields some of the most diverse and fascinating phenomena in physics.
