Abstract

By far the most isotopes were discovered in heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reactions. Including the superheavy isotopes discussed in Chaps. 5 and 12 more than 700 isotopes were observed for the first time following the fusion of heavy ions. They were primarily identified by their characteristic decay radiation. The various detection techniques for measuring \(\mathrm {\alpha }\)- and \(\mathrm {\beta }\)-particles, as well as \(\mathrm {\gamma }\)-rays and delayed protons are described in the chapter.
