Freshwater Crustacean Zooplankton of Europe

Abstract

Copepoda classification and its taxonomic rank follows those proposed by Huys and Boxshall (1991), Dussart and Defaye (2001, 2002, 2006), and Boxshall and Halsey (2004). The classification of the higher taxonomic ranks suffers similar problems as those already described in the Cladocera section. In general, the ongoing dynamic of the taxonomy is based on phylogenetic analysis, which has been changing systematics into strictly phylogenetic nomenclature, consisting of a formal rank-free classification system with taxonomic recognition of species (Ellison et al. 2014). Here, in several following chapters, are descriptions of 158 Copepoda species (90—Calanoida, 68—Cyclopoida) and their genera, families, and orders reported from Europe up to the end of October 2015. They are listed below.

The subfamily Microdiaptominae Elias-Gutierrez and Suarez-Morales, 1998, with one genus and one species, Microdiaptomus cokeri Osorio-Tafall, 1942—not represented in Europe (Elias-Gutiérrez and Suarez-Morales 1998), is in question and was placed into the subfamily Speodiaptominae (Brancelj 2005).
