Abstract
Traditionally, education in Chile has focused on two main needs. The first is to socialise the new members of a society, and the second is to prepare them for the working world (needs which until now have excluded older adults). Some decades ago, different types of educational initiatives began to develop in Chile, stemming from different actors, including the national government, universities, municipalities, public and private law corporations, etc. These have helped to make knowledge more democratic, making it possible for older adults to acquire useful tools to positively address the changes inherent to the aging process from a biomedical, psychological, functional, and social perspective. At the same time, they have helped promote the right to equal opportunities in social participation in comparison to other age groups. This chapter gives an overview of senior adult education in Chile, shedding some light on the challenges emerging in this field.
