Abstract

The growth of the third age population in Italy is a very important phenomenon that is affecting all areas of social policy. After briefly describing the older population in Italy, from both a demographical and social point of view, this chapter outlines an analysis of the numerous and varied educational initiatives addressed to the ageing Italian population from a pedagogical perspective. The goal of this chapter is to focus on the educational environments that meet the learning needs in later life – whether in formal education settings (intentionally structured places), nonformal educational settings (intentionally educational places which may not have been designed for this purpose), and informal educational settings (unintentionally educational places). This chapter also considers the classification of educational and self-learning experiences, a model that provides several criteria for interpreting the services and contexts offering learning opportunities for older persons.
