Abstract
Debriefing is an essential component of pediatric simulation-based education. It is during debriefing the majority of learning during simulation occurs. Therefore, conducting an effective debriefing is a critical skill for any pediatric simulation educator. In this chapter, a detailed overview of debriefing practice is offered to pediatric simulation educators. This includes a review of the origin and importance of debriefing, an examination of several frameworks for debriefing in healthcare simulation, an in-depth review of several approaches to facilitate the debriefing conversation, and a review of how these frameworks and approaches have been applied to pediatric simulation. Strategies to optimize debriefing in healthcare simulation, including creating supportive learning environments, are reviewed. In addition, unique aspects of pediatric simulation relevant for the debriefing are defined. Optional practices to augment debriefing effectiveness, such as co-debriefing, scripted debriefing, and video-enhanced debriefing, are explored and examined. Finally, the burgeoning topic of assessing the effectiveness of debriefing is explored.
