Abstract

Common anomalies of the fetal head and neck span a wide variety ranging from dysmorphisms (such as macro-/microcephaly, hypo-/hypertelorism, or cleft lip/palate) to lymphovascular malformations to neoplasms (such as hemangiomas, teratomas, and neuroblastomas). Fetal MRI often provides more detailed assessment of such lesions than is possible on ultrasound, while also allowing evaluation of associated anomalies (commonly intracranial). MRI is also valuable in determining the need for prepartum surgery and delivery planning, with particular attention needed in masses of the head and neck to assess for potential pharyngeal obstruction.
