Abstract

This chapter presents a short introduction into probing photoexcited dynamics of isolated molecules by ultrashort x-ray pulses. It describes the basic concepts of electronic and nuclear dynamics in a molecule after optical excitation and shows basic concepts like element and site specific probing associated with x-rays. It discusses ultrafast x-ray sources for molecular spectroscopy and presents some of the very first gas phase molecular dynamics results that this young field has produced.
