Abstract
Oxygen is the most commonly used medication in critical care setting. It is used in different concentrations with various types of delivery systems. Two main varieties of delivery system are low-flow system (nasal cannula, face masks, and non-rebreathing masks) and high-flow system (high-flow nasal cannula, Venturi masks, and continuous positive airway pressure system). For this reason it is important for intensivists to be familiar with the requirement of oxygen therapy and equipments used to deliver it. This chapter will discuss the pathophysiology of hypoxemia, indications and goals of oxygen therapy, functions and limitations of various oxygen delivery systems and devices, and monitoring and complications of oxygen therapy.
