Abstract
The thoracic cage supports and protects the intrathoracic and upper abdominal contents. The ribs are the major osseous components of the chest wall and are in nearly constant motion secondary to respiratory movements. To serve their function, the bony ribs are long, thin bones with a complex curved shape between their spino-costal joints and medial costal cartilages. The specialized anatomy and function of the ribs require careful application of principles to achieve successful results when applying surgical stabilization techniques. This chapter will examine the principles of plate application for fractures with a specific emphasis on rib fracture fixation.
