Abstract

The microcirculation represents the district of the vascular bed in which the major part of energy dissipation in order to overcome resistance occurs; it includes small arteries (diameter ranging from 100 to 300 μm), arterioles (diameter less than 100 μm) and the capillary network (diameter around 7 μm) [1] (Fig. 10.1). Small arteries probably contribute for about 30–50 % of pre-capillary blood pressure drop, while an additional 30 % drop occurs at the arteriolar level (50–100 μm) with a distribution of resistance that varies among different vascular beds and between species [2]. Figure 10.1 represents a typical but generic example of blood pressure drop in the vascular system, since pressure-diameter curves might differ in various tissues/organs.
