Abstract

This chapter discusses base-isolation systems. A set of simple examples are presented to identify the key parameters and illustrate the quantitative aspects of base isolation. This material is followed by a discussion of practical aspects of seismic base isolation and a description of some seismically isolated buildings. The remaining sections deal with the behavioral and design issues for base isolated multi-degree-of-freedom structural systems. Numerical results illustrating the level of performance feasible with seismic base isolation are included to provide a basis of comparison with the other motion control schemes considered in this text.
