Abstract

Livelihood comprises the capabilities, assets (including both material and social resources) and activities required for a means of living. It is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from stresses or shocks and maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets both now and in the future, while not undermining the natural resource base (DfID 1999; Scoones 1998 ; Carney 1998 ). The author has attempted to elaborate the changes in the lifestyles of the rural communities from the past to the present.
