Abstract
The aviator reaching for the stratosphere will encounter a life threatening environment of many dimensions. It includes extremely low pressures, extremely low temperatures, a potential 450°F shock wave, potential g-loads that can rip you out of your ejection seat before you’re able to pull the handle, loss of consciousness, very narrow operating ranges, sudden and violent motions that can disintegrate the aircraft, and very rapid sequences of events. In short, this is not a place to be; unless, of course, you have the latest state-of-the-art equipment and training.
