Abstract

The industry has set itself the goal of developing the perfect drawer runner. People should be thrilled to see how technological advances have turned moving a drawer into a real experience. In the past people had to learn how to use a drawer. You didn’t simply pull it, you pulled it with a certain feel. One didn’t just shove the drawer back into the cabinet, you closed it carefully. If you are angry you might use a bit more force to close it. But this is no longer possible. Drawers have learned how they are to be closed and have assumed this task by themselves. Technical works of wonder on the side of the drawers assimilate man’s pull and translate it into a sliding motion which the manufacturers describe as the perfect movement. It is gentle and silent. Even when we don’t close a drawer with the right feeling. Small works of wonder for, movement have made this possible. The more brute force we apply, the stronger the effect of technology. It transforms what appears to be rough into technical ideal. Back to the perfectly choreographed movement of closing. When you close such a perfect drawer for the first time, you are really surprised. You want to shut the drawer but then you notice some resistance. If you let go of the drawer, it closes as if by magic. You keep trying and trying. The drawer shuts best if you give it a good push. Then the contrast between the brute force and the perfectly beginning closing movement of the machine is best visible. The uninitiated are delighted by this small feat of technology. One gives it another try and there you go, it is always the same perfect closing movement, no matter whether you close the drawer very gently or with brute force.
