Die Forschung an Stammzellen wird derzeit als ein Gebiet mit großem Potential angesehen, sowohl für die Grundlagenforschung als auch für die Entwicklung neuer Therapien. Während die Stammzellforschung uns vielfältige Möglichkeiten eröffnet, ist es gleichzeitig notwendig, Entscheidungen bezüglich der Gewinnung und eventuellen Anwendung von Stammzellen zu treffen. Diese Entscheidungen reichen von ethischen Bedenken bis hin zu medizinischen Unwägbarkeiten etwaiger neuer Behandlungsmethoden, die auf dem Einsatz von Stammzellen beruhen. Dieses Kapitel soll helfen, verschiedene Aspekte zu beleuchten, die für die Entscheidungsfindung von Bedeutung sein könnten. Unser Ziel ist es, einen kurzen Überblick über die verschiedenen Stammzelltypen zu geben und darauf aufbauend die Vor- und Nachteile sowie auch die aktuellen Probleme der Forschung aufzuzeigen. Darüber hinaus möchten wir unsere Arbeit mit humanen embryonalen Stammzellen (hES) in Österreich beschreiben und die dabei gewonnenen Erkenntnisse diskutieren.
