Zusammenfassung
Als die ICE-Sonde am 11. September 1985 den Schweif des Kometen Giacobini-Zinner durchquerte, konnten wir zum ersten Mal direkt vor Ort einen Blick auf die unmittelbare Umgebung eines Kometen werfen. Viele der dabei beobachteten Merkmale hatte man erwartet, doch es gab auch Überraschungen. Der Komet war 1900 von Michel Giacobini in Nizza an der französischen Riviera entdeckt und dann 1913 von Ernst Zinner in Bamberg wiederentdeckt worden. Er bewegt sich auf einer Bahn, die ihn einmal in 6,5 Jahren in rechtläufiger oder prograder Richtung (das heißt, vom Nordpol der Ekliptik aus gesehen entgegen dem Uhrzeigersinn laufend) um die Sonne führt. Seine Periheldistanz beträgt 1,03 Astronomische Einheiten, die Inklination oder Neigung seiner Bahn zur Ekliptikebene 32 Grad.
