Abstract
Intracardiac shunts can occur at various locations and may be the result of a congenital heart defect—either as an isolated defect or as part of a complex congenital anomaly, or the result of other intracardiac pathologies like an infectious disease. Full evaluation is critical in order to offer optimal therapy—intervene when needed, or avoid intervention that can have detrimental effects. When investigating an atrial septal defect several parameters must be analyzed in order to obtain a comprehensive evaluation. These include type and size of the defect, magnitude and direction of the shunt, cardiac response to the overload (chamber size and function), and pulmonary pressures and pulmonary vascular resistance.
