Abstract

This chapter develops the foundations of logic programming. Starting from Herbrand's Theorem, free models and Herbrand structures are introduced. The resolution method and its use in the solution of algorithmic problems is explained in three steps, first on the propositional level, then for firstorder formulas without unification, and finally in the general case using the unification algorithm.
