Abstract

A capacitor is a circuit element used to store energy in the form of an electric field and consists, in general, of two isolated conductors (called plates) facing each other and separated by a certain distance. Many devices we deal with in our everyday life, including spark plugs, camera flashes, computer keyboards, and touchscreen smartphones, work thanks to one or more capacitors. What interests us as anesthesiologists or intensivists is that a capacitor is also the essential constituent of a defibrillator.
