Abstract
Sulfur is not one of the most absorbed macronutrients by crops, although being key to ensure efficiency of nitrogen nutrition and crop yield. Knowledge of S in the plant is fundamental for understanding plant nutrition as many nutrients are involved in S metabolism. In this chapter, we discuss initially (i) basic aspects of S in the soil; (ii) S uptake, transport, and redistribution; (iii) S metabolism (reduction and assimilation); (iv) nutritional requirements for S in crops; (v) S extraction, export, and accumulation by the main crops; and (vi) S deficiency and toxicity symptoms.
