Abstract
This chapter introduces the Alpha male, offering an example of this ideological figure and discussing its popularization in Anglophone North American contexts, using the example of its interpolation in a popular US television series. It continues by sketching out the book as a whole, including the foci and objectives of different chapters, while also situating this work within a broader field of critical linguistics. Further addressed are author positionality and the influence of author stance on description, interpretation, and analysis.

In perhaps his most famous song, cantautore Gaber proclaims “la libertà non è star sopra un albero, non è neanche aver un’opinione. La libertà non è uno spazio libero. Libertà è partecipazione.” [‘Freedom is not standing up atop a tree, nor is it having an opinion. Freedom isn’t an open field. Freedom is participation.’ Translation mine.]
