Abstract
Many pediatric nephrology practices are recognizing the value that the advanced practice provider (APP) brings to their healthcare team. In this chapter you will better understand the preparation and training of APPs and how they can be utilized as an integral team member in both acute and chronic dialysis settings, facilitating care coordination, leading quality improvement initiatives, and ultimately improving both short- and long-term outcomes in this unique population. The APP is often the first-line healthcare provider, directing initial recommendations for acute dialysis complications, managing chronic dialysis care, and providing health-literate education to patients and families. This unique role empowers the APP to partner with physicians and practice to his or her full scope, functioning as an efficient and effective member of the healthcare team and providing optimal care for the pediatric dialysis patient.
