Abstract

In the chapter, basing upon long-term experience and modern literature is critically evaluated the role of existing methods allowing to determine the etiology of the infectious process with special attention to “false-positive” and “false-negative” results while diagnostics of bacterial, viral, fungal, mycoplasma, and protozoan infections. Special attention is paid to the diagnostic value of microscopic examination of histologic slices and smears. The theses that several methods have to be used and their results have to be critically compared are central in authors’ diagnostic concept. Chapter is illustrated by 10 original photos illustrating different microscopic methods.
