Diseases of the Liver and Biliary Tree

Abstract

Biliary tract infections, also known as cholangitis, are characterized by an inflammation of the bile ducts. Acute cholangitis is a potentially lethal medical emergency characterized by the obstruction and subsequent infection of the biliary tree. Partial or complete obstruction of the bile duct and subsequent infection is generally the primary factor triggering the development of acute cholangitis. Choledocholithiasis, defined as the presence of at least one gallstone in the common bile duct, is the most frequent underlying cause of cholangitis in Western countries. The management of cholangitis has evolved radically over the past century, moving from a purely surgical approach to an endoscopic one. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is currently the treatment of choice to establish biliary drainage and often to remove gallstones.
