Abstract
General surgery is both a core clerkship rotation and a popular advanced elective for medical students, particularly those interested in pursuing a surgical residency. This is often regarded as one of the most difficult rotations, largely in part due to its drastic difference from all other rotations and the lack of effective advice. No longer will students need to rely on generic advice such as “be helpful” and “be nice” to excel on this critical rotation. Written by medical students for medical students, this chapter covers exactly what a student should know and do to excel on the general surgery rotation. Highlights include an introduction to the world of surgery, practical pointers for floor work and the operating room, and an overview of common procedural skills. Specific attention is given to pointers that empower students to shine and demonstrate their mastery of general surgery.
