Abstract
There is a broad spectrum of pathologies, both focal and systemic, chronically damaging the kidneys in many ways.
The damage mechanisms are very different, but they all lead to a final common condition called chronic kidney disease (CKD).
CKD is a clinical diagnosis, but ultrasound examination can be useful to provide some information to understand the underlying cause or to give an idea of the damage degree.
In this chapter we define CKD and we illustrate the main causes and the sonographic elements that can be evaluated.
