Abstract

In the diagnostic ultrasound the artifacts are frequent to find, intended as images that do not correspond to the anatomical structures examined.

A false image is generated which can also cause a diagnostic error. In other cases, the artifact helps to correct the interpretation of the doubtful findings.

It is essential to know the physics of ultrasound and the interaction of these with matter, because some artifacts can be avoided. In fact, some artifacts derive from one incorrect scanning technique. Other artifacts are generated by the intrinsic physical limitations of the technique.

There are numerous ultrasound artifacts, which the sonographer must know and recognize to minimize the diagnostic error.
