Abstract
There are many things to consider when deciding whether or not to pursue a fellowship year (or two depending on subspecialty) after residency training. Factors such as time commitment, subspecialty choice, location, and even financial considerations must be contemplated. This chapter aims to highlight the pros and cons of completing a fellowship, as well as how to choose the right fellowship fit for you. It also discusses ways to positively stand out during your training and the impact this will have on your future career prospects and contribution to the field of ophthalmology. Fellowship is much more self-directed than residency training; therefore, it is important to set goals both clinically and surgically, and pursue research in your areas of interest. We review the definitions of mentorship versus sponsorship, and the reasons why it is specifically important that female physicians have both types of support during their careers. Mentorship refers to support and advice for career path. Sponsorship specifically describes providing opportunities for career advancement, including speaking engagements, and research participation. Finally, this chapter makes a strong case for valuing and pursuing self-care during a busy fellowship. It is important to care for yourself first, so that you can provide exceptional care to your patients.
