Abstract

Complications occur for every surgeon, irrespective of experience, gender, or specialty. Anticipating complications preoperatively, having a plan of action should they occur, and employing thoughtful, honest communication postoperatively are primary keys to success in managing the unexpected in surgery. Proper preoperative discussions with the patient including additional risk factors present may help patients better comprehend potential complications that arise postoperatively.
